He recalls being just four or five years old when some kids picked on him, taking off his glasses and throwing them in a sandpit.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.60&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was not a fun day,\u201d said Lucas. \u201cI felt really sad after that, and I had to call my parents to get more glasses because I can\u2019t really see that well without glasses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lucas felt down after being bullied, but he soon found an outlet to channel his emotions into something positive. At age 6, he began volunteering. By getting involved with his community, he was able to change how he felt about himself and ultimately, how others would come to see him.<\/p>\n<p>He began by helping at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lakeshorehumane.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lakeshore Humane Society<\/a>, fostering animals until they were able to be adopted into a permanent home. (Although, sometimes the Smith home ended up being that permanent home for Lucas\u2019 furry friends.)<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.60&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Lucas\u2019 mother, Wendy, said her son \u2013 who is autistic \u2013 showed an affinity for animals with special needs, including a cat with asthma and a puppy with a heart condition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe shut down because of the bullying,\u201d Wendy said. \u201cThen he started connecting with the animals a lot and helping in the community. Knowing that he was doing good in the community and he was connected to something, kept motivating him more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fourteen-year-old Lucas Smith clearly remembers one of the first times he was bullied. The league\u2019s custom-designed rubberized baseball field makes it all-inclusive, even for children in wheelchairs. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s really cool is that everybody plays,\u201d Wendy said. \u201cEverybody bats. Everybody wins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lucas began playing for the Miracle League in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and later got involved with a committee that helped fundraise to bring the Miracle League to his hometown in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.60&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Lucas is also a peer ambassador for <a href=\"http:\/\/gabnow.org\/\">Generations Against Bullying<\/a>, a Wisconsin-based anti-bullying organization that provides services and support for students, parents and schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever I see bullying, I try to help,\u201d said Lucas. \u201cI just want to help [the kids] through their situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s inspiring is that he himself is autistic,\u201d said Lee Thennes, principal at Lucas\u2019 school. \u201cBut he certainly goes above and beyond in his call to the community. She recalled a recent event where Lucas spoke in front of an audience of 700 people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had at least five people on our way out either stop and say, \u2018Luke, you inspire me\u2019 or come up to me or my husband and say, \u2018Wow, your kid inspires me and that\u2019s what I needed to hear today,\u2019\u201d Wendy said.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Lucas was honored with a Prudential Spirit of Community Award, recognizing youth volunteerism. And of course, helping others. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBullying would normally hurt somebody, but it kind of helped give me the confidence to go further into the community,\u201d Lucas said. \u201cI stood up more than I stood down, after what happened.
