\u201cReports of the shooter described a student who had been mocked, laughed at, and ostracized during his high school experience\u201d<\/em>. The discussion centered on whether the shooting would ever have occurred if there had been an upstander who would have befriended him when he was being bullied. Or, if an upstander would have approached school officials to point out the problem to try and get him help. <\/p>\nThe Peers talked about how important it is to take threats seriously. They discussed the ways to get involved by upstanding when someone is being bullied, being a friend to someone going through a rough patch in life; and, reporting to a proper authority when they witness threats. <\/p>\n
Linda said, \u201cThreats must be taken seriously, including threats to take one\u2019s own life\u201d<\/em>. Linda then referred to the GAB poster illustrating how \u201cbullycide\u201d (suicide as a direct result of bullying) is now one of the leading causes of death in our children ages 10-14 years. She posed the question, \u201cHow many of these kids could have been saved if someone had become an upstander, and become their friend\u201d.<\/em> <\/p>\nEveryone shared stories in their life about how someone who helped them made a difference in their life. They emphasized how important it is to be kind. \u201cSometimes just a smile can make a difference in someone\u2019s life\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\nGAB volunteer Martha Sanchez Hernandez helped Linda during the meeting<\/p>\n

Katherine R. Leiske Harder, Director of Special Education\/Pupil Services, East Troy Community School District, invited GAB to speak to a group of parents and students at the East Troy Middle School. \u00a0 <\/span>GAB motivational speaker, Shae McNamara, and James Dean, GAB Executive Assistant, described how we could address the bullying epidemic in our society. James stated, \u201cIf you become an upstander in a non-threatening way, the bullying will stop within 10 seconds 85% of the time\u201d. Shae added, \u201cYou have to believe you are good enough.\u00a0 <\/span>This starts with loving who you are.
